COMMITTEE ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD CLOSES ITS SEVENTY-FIFTH
SESSION

The Committee on the Rights of the Child this afternoon closed its seventy-fifth session after adopting its concluding observations and recommendations on the reports of Antigua and Barbuda, Bhutan, Cameroon, Lebanon, Mongolia, Qatar, Romania and the United States.

The concluding observations on the reports will be made available on the session’s webpage on Thursday, 8 June.

Renate Winter, Committee Chairperson, said that there were 196 State parties to the Convention on the Rights of the Child as of 2 June 2017. The Optional Protocol on the involvement of children in armed conflict had been ratified or acceded to by 166 States, whereas the Optional Protocol on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography had been ratified or acceded to by 173 States. The third Optional Protocol on a communications procedure had been ratified or acceded to by 173 countries.

Ms. Winter said that in addition to its consideration of 11 reports by 8 countries during the session, under the review of communications under the Optional Protocol, the Committee had decided to discontinue case no. 9. In the context of the outcome of the treaty bodies strengthening process as decided by the General Assembly in its resolution 68/268, the Committee had continued its work on its working methods, including the simplified reporting procedure. The Committee had also continued its work on its joint comment together with the Committee on the Protection of Migrant Workers and Their Families on children in the context of migration.

Bernard Gastaud, Committee Rapporteur, reported on the activities of Committee members during the seventy-fifth session in numerous roundtables, seminars and conferences. He underlined Experts’ intense activities during and in between sessions in Geneva and across the world.

The Committee then adopted the report of the seventy-fifth session.

The seventy-sixth session will take place at the Palais Wilson from 11 to 29 September 2017, during which the Committee will consider the reports of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Denmark, Ecuador, Republic of Moldova, Tajikistan and Vanuatu under the Convention; the reports of Guinea, Tajikistan and Vanuatu under the Optional Protocol on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography; and the reports of Cyprus, Guinea, Tajikistan and Vanuatu under the Optional Protocol on children in armed conflict.
