Who we are
In the historic setting of the Palais des Nations, UN Geneva brings together individuals, organizations and nations to ensure a better future for all. As a diplomatic center, with near universal representation of states, Geneva is the ideal location for successful international cooperation. Around 8,000 meetings were held at the Palais des Nations last year, each in different ways touching the lives of people around the globe.
Director-General
The Director-General is responsible for all activities of the United Nations Office at Geneva. She undertakes special political assignments and representation as requested by the Secretary-General. The Director-General represents the Secretary-General in relations with Permanent Missions and observer offices based in Geneva and deals with the Swiss authorities in matters relating to the relevant privileges and immunities of staff of the United Nations system in Switzerland. Tatiana Valovaya is the 13th Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UN Geneva) and the first woman to occupy this position.
The UN in Geneva
A range of UN entities are headquartered in Geneva, such as the World Health Organization, UNHCR, the International Labour Organization, the International Organization for Migration and many more. Geneva houses more than 40 international organizations, more than 180 permanent missions and over 400 NGOs which makes it an important hub for the United Nations. In addition to the UN entities headquartered here, most UN funds, programmes and agencies maintain a regional office or liaison office in Switzerland.
