HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL TO HOLD SESSION ON 12 DECEMBER FOR SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

The Human Rights Council will hold a commemorative session on Friday 12 December on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Ambassador Martin Ihoeghian Uhomoibhi, President of the Human Rights Council, will open the commemorative session at 10 a.m. After hearing children reading articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a general segment will be held to hear presentations of national, regional and international initiatives launched on the occasion of the anniversary. This will be followed by a film screening depicting human rights stories from around the globe.

In the afternoon, a high-level segment will be held at which United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, and other dignitaries will participate. Statements will also be read by representatives from civil society which will followed by a performance by a choir closing the event.

The session will be held in the newly refurbished Human Rights Council and Alliance of Civilizations Room (Salle XX), which was inaugurated by the United Nations Secretary-General and the King and Queen of Spain on 18 November.

The commemorative session comes following a year-long series of special events around the world to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
