New Permanent Observer of European Union Presents Letter of Nomination to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva
Deike Potzel, the new Permanent Observer of the European Union to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her letter of nomination to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Potzel, who is German, had been serving as the Special Envoy for Middle East Humanitarian Issues at the German Federal Foreign Office (2023–2025), concurrently serving as Director General for Crisis Prevention, Stabilisation, Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Assistance (2022–2025). She has also held other positions within the German Federal Foreign Office for the majority of her career, including as Inspector General (2021–2022); Deputy Director General for human resources (2014–2017); Deputy Head of Division for Personnel, Staff Development and Planning (2008–2012); and multiple desk officer positions between 1995 and 2008.
Ms. Potzel has also served as Ambassador of the German Federal Republic to Ireland (2014–2017); Head of the Personal Office of Federal President Joachim Gauck (2012–2013); Head of the Cultural, Press and Science Section at the German Embassy in Tehran, Iran (2002–2004); and Press, Protocol and Political Attaché at the German Embassy in Singapore (1998–2000).
Ms. Potzel holds a Civil Servant/ Diplomat Qualification from the Foreign Service Academy of the German Federal Foreign Office in Bonn (1995), and a master’s degree from Humboldt University in Berlin, in English and French language and literature studies (1992). She was born on 14 October 1968 in Berlin.
