NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALDIVES PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA

Presentation of Credentials

 

Asim Ahmed, the new Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Ahmed had been serving as Ambassador-at-large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 24 March 2019 to 9 August 2020, representing Maldives in meetings of the United Nations General Assembly in New York and the Human Rights Council in Geneva. He began his career in public service at the former Ministry of Planning and National Development in 1985, where he became Director for Strategic Planning. From 2011 to 2013, Mr. Ahmed served as the Minister of Education. During this period, the President appointed him periodically as the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Acting Minister of Tourism.

Mr. Ahmed has provided consultancies in a wide range of social and economic areas to a number of United Nations bodies and international organizations.

Mr. Ahmed has a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and politics from the University of South Pacific, Fiji (1989). He has a Master of Philosophy in development studies from the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, United Kingdom (1992) and a Doctor of Philosophy from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand (2011). He was born in Male in January 1963 and is married with two children.
