NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SENEGAL PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA

Presentation of Credentials

Bassirou Sene, the new Permanent Representative of Senegal to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Michael Møller, the Acting Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his Geneva posting, Mr. Sene was Ambassador of Senegal to Ethiopia, a position he took up in 2010. During that time he was also the Permanent Representative of Senegal to the African Union, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the United Nations Environment Programme and UN-Habitat. From 2008 to 2010 Mr. Sene was based in Dakar, Senegal where he held the position of Technical Adviser at the Cabinet of the Foreign Minister with the rank of Minister and later Ambassador.

From 2004 to 2008, Mr. Sene was a Political Affairs Adviser at the African Union office in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, and he served as interim Special Representative from July to December 2005. Mr. Sene undertook a six-year tour of duty as Foreign Affairs Adviser at the Embassy of Senegal to Ethiopia from 1998 to 2004. He joined the foreign service in 1994 and held several positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dakar for the first four years of his diplomatic career.

Mr. Sene studied at the National School of Administration and Magistracy in Senegal between 1991 and 1994. He worked for the Ministry of the Interior from 1981 to 1991.

Mr. Sene has studied at several academic institutions around the world where he gained diplomas in disciplines including military naval justice; disarmament, demobilization and reintegration; and conflict mediation. Mr. Sene was born in Diourbel, Senegal on 17 December 1957 and is married.
