NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MOZAMBIQUE PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Pedro Comissário Afonso, the new Permanent Representative of Mozambique to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Comissário Afonso served as Mozambique’s Ambassador to Sweden and other Nordic countries since 2006. He was Director of Legal and Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation from 2001 to 2006, and served as Mozambique’s Ambassador to Portugal between 1996 and 2001. He was the Permanent Representative of Mozambique to the United Nations in New York from 1989 to 1996.

A career diplomat, Mr. Comissário Afonso has held numerous posts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Maputo. He has represented Mozambique at numerous United Nations conferences and other international and regional fora. He has also taught law to university students in Mozambique and has written many articles related to international law, constitutional law and other issues in the area of international relations.

Mr. Comissário Afonso holds a law degree from Eduardo Modlane University, Mozambique (1975 to 1981); a Masters degree in constitutional and international law from Colombia University School of Law (1990 to 1991); and attended advanced post-graduate studies in international relations at Colombia University School of International and Public Affairs (1992 to 1994). He was born on 18 September 1957 and is married with four children.
