NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THAILAND PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Thani Thongphakdi, the new Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Thongphakdi had been serving as Director-General of the Department of Information since 2010. From 2005 to 2010, he was Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Office of the Minister, then Minister-Counsellor and Chief of Staff of the Office of the Minister, and from 2007 he was Minister and Chief of Staff of the Office of the Minister and concurrently Deputy Director-General of the Department of Information.

A career diplomat, Mr. Thongphakdi served in Washington from 2001 to 2004, first as Counsellor at the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington and then as Minister-Counsellor. He was seconded to the Secretariat of the Prime Minister from 1995 to 2001. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Attaché, Division of International Development Affairs, Department of International Organizations, in 1987.

Mr. Thongphakdi has a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Science from the Australian National University, and a Master of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University in the United States. He was born on 23 December 1963 and is married.
