NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF PAKISTAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Zamir Akram, the new Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Akram had been serving as Additional Secretary for Foreign Affairs in the Prime Minister's Office since 2005 and Additional Secretary for disarmament and arms control. He was Pakistan's Ambassador to Nepal from 2002 to 2005.

A career diplomat, Mr. Akram's foreign postings include Washington from 2000 to 2002 and from 1994 to 1998; New Delhi from 1989 to 1994; Geneva from 1984 to 1986; and Moscow from 1982 to 1984. His posts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad include serving as Director General for South Asia from 1998 to 2000; Director for Afghanistan from 1987 to 1989; and Selection Officer for the Soviet Union from 1979 to 1982. He joined the Foreign Service of Pakistan in 1978.

Mr. Akram has a Masters degree in international relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He was born on 4 October 1953.
