NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SYRIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Faysal Khabbaz Hamoui, the new Permanent Representative of Syria to the United Nations Office at Geneva, presented his credentials today to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Hamoui had been serving as Head of the International Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Syria since 2004. He served as Minister Councillor at the Permanent Mission of Syria to the United Nations Office at Geneva from 1998 to 2003.

A career diplomat, Mr. Hamoui’s foreign posts include being Deputy Head of Mission in Brussels from 2003 to 2004; Second and First Secretary in Brussels from 1989 to 1994; and Third Secretary at the Syrian Embassy in Athens from 1982 to 1987. He has also served in a number of capacities at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Damascus.

Mr. Hamoui joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in July 1980, and then studied at the International Administration Institute in Paris from 1980 to 1982 where he received two diplomas from the Institute and from the South Paris University. He has a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Brussels (2003). He obtained a degree after studying French language and literature at the University of Damascus (1977).

Mr. Hamoui has a daughter.
