NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF REPUBLIC OF KOREA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Lee Sung-joo, the new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations Office at Geneva, presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, on 23 April.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Lee had been in Seoul at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade dealing with negotiations on the Doha Development Agenda since 2006. He was Ambassador to Ukraine from 2003 to 2006. His other foreign assignments include serving at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Belgium and the Mission of the Republic of Korea to the European Union from 1999 to 2001; at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations in New York from 1994 to 1997; and at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations Office at Geneva from 1991 to 1994. He was also posted in India from 1985 to 1988; the Netherlands from 1980 to 1985; and the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1980.

Mr. Lee has held a number of posts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea, including as Director-General of the Multilateral Trade Bureau from 2001 to 2003; and Deputy Director-General of the International Economic Affairs Bureau from 1998 to 1999. From 1997 to 1998, he was the Deputy Director-General for the United Nations System Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also served as the Deputy Director-General for international organizations at the Office of Policy Planning, and the Director of the Multilateral Trade Organizations Division at the International Trade Bureau. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1975.

Mr. Lee has a Masters from the International Institute of Public Administration in Paris, France in international political science (1984) and a university degree from the Department of International Relations at Seoul National University. He was born on 15 December 1950 and is married with two children.
