From 5 to 14 August 2025, Geneva hosted the second part of the fifth session of UN talks to develop a global treaty on plastic pollution. While delegates did not reach final agreement, they made progress and agreed to continue negotiations toward an ambitious, legally binding instrument.

🎦 Dr Rik Peeperkorn, WHO Representative in oPt (from Jerusalem), provides an update on the health situation on Gaza. "Nearly 12,000 children under 5 years old in Gaza were identified to be suffering from acute malnutrition in July. Currently, less than 50% of hospitals and 38% of primary health care centres across the Gaza Strip are partly or minimally functional."

Second part of the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on plastic pollution (INC-5.2)
INC-5.2 aims to finalize and approve the text of an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, and to forward it for consideration and adoption at a future Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries.
Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)
The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is the body of independent experts which monitors implementation of the Convention by the States parties.
Worldwide, there are an estimated one billion people with disabilities. Through its engagement and cooperation with States parties, the Committee promotes inclusion, advocates for the human rights of all persons with disabilities, and provides recommendations to support the implementation of the provisions enshrined in the Convention.

Join us for a commemorative ceremony of World Humanitarian Day 2025
World Humanitarian Day (WHD), which takes place every year on 19 August, was designated by the UN General Assembly in 2008 to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq.
Join us on 19 August at 4 pm for a solemn ceremony to remember those who paid the utmost sacrifice in line of duty and to honour the invaluable contribution of humanitarian workers.
The Geneva World Humanitarian Day commemoration is organized in collaboration with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The ceremony will be held outside the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room (Room XX).
