New Permanent Representative of Viet Nam Presents Credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Presentation of Credentials

Phan Dung Mai, the new Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Mai had been serving as Vice President of the State Committee for Vietnamese Abroad at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam since January 2022.  He was Director-General of the Department of Cultural Diplomacy and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization at the Ministry, and Secretary-General of the National Commission of Viet Nam for the Organization from September 2019 to December 2021.  He served as interim Director-General of the Department from June 2018 to September 2019, and Deputy-Director-General from December 2017 to June 2018.

A career diplomat, Mr. Mai served as Head of the Chancellery at the Embassy of Viet Nam in France from August 2014 to November 2017, and also served there as an attaché in charge of Francophone affairs from March 2003 to September 2006.  He has held various other posts in Hanoi, including Deputy Director-General of the Department of International Affairs and Provinces from December 2013 to July 2014; and Deputy Director-General of the Department of International Organizations from January 2010 to November 2013.       

Mr. Mai was born on 19 July 1973. He studied international relations at the Ecole nationale d’administration in Strasbourg, France (2006), law at the University of Law in Hanoi, Viet Nam (1999-2002), and foreign languages at the Ecole normale supérieurs en langues étrangères in Hanoi, Viet Nam (1990-1994).
