POLAND’S RECORD ON WOMEN’S RIGHTS TO FACE SCRUTINY BY UNITED NATIONS COMMITTEE

GENEVA (16 October 2014) – Poland’s record on women’s rights will be examined by the UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on Wednesday 22 October 2014 in meetings that will be webcast live.

Poland is one of the 188 States parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and is required to submit regular reports to the Committee of 23 independent experts on how it is implementing the Convention.

Among the issues likely to be discussed by the Committee and the Polish government delegation are: compliance of anti-discrimination legislation with the Convention; measures to enhance women’s equal participation in public and political life, representation on public and private sector management boards; protection for domestic violence victims; steps to tackle trafficking in women; gender pay gap; effect of illegal abortions on women’s health; legal and policy framework to enable a woman to have an abortion when it is permitted under the law.
