Ambassador Tolmajian [Permanent Representative of Armenia],
Excellencies,
Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and gentlemen,

It is a great pleasure to join you today for this inspiring chess tournament. I extend my sincere appreciation to the Permanent Mission of Armenia for organizing this remarkable event here at the Palais des Nations.

Chess is more than just a game — it is a universal language that transcends borders, cultures and generations. It is a testament to human intellect, strategy and perseverance. On 12 December 2019, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 20 July as World Chess Day, marking the anniversary of the establishment of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924.

Chess holds a prominent role in Armenian culture, often described as a national sport and a source of national pride. The game is deeply embedded in the country’s social life, producing world-class players and grandmasters who have left an indelible mark in this sport. Recognizing the educational benefits of chess, Armenia was the first country to make chess a mandatory subject in its public schools' curriculum. This initiative has set an inspiring example for other countries, demonstrating how chess can shape young minds and prepare future generations for the challenges ahead.

Beyond its competitive spirit, chess offers important opportunities in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Much like a well-planned strategy on the chessboard, achieving sustainable development requires strategic vision, foresight and decisive action. As in chess, where a player must think several moves ahead, the international community must anticipate challenges and work together to create lasting solutions.

There is a well-known chess idiom: “When you see a good move, look for a better one.” The 2030 Agenda provides us with a strong foundation, but it is through continuous collaboration, innovation and adaptation that we will achieve the best possible outcomes for all. Just as in chess, where players refine their strategies to secure victory, countries must work together to improve policies and ensure sustainable progress for future generations.

This tournament offers an important occasion to reflect on the values that chess promotes — strategic thinking, patience, resilience, and mutual respect. These qualities are not only essential in the game but also in diplomacy, governance and international cooperation.

Let us continue to promote chess as a tool for education, inclusion and peace. And let us ensure that its benefits reach every corner of the world, empowering individuals and strengthening communities.

I wish all participants in the tournament the best of luck and success, and I hope all our guests enjoy this positive and uplifting experience!

Thank you, and I look forward to seeing many of you at future tournaments celebrating this timeless game.
