New Permanent Representative of Iraq Presents Credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva
Saywan Barzani, the new Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Barzani had been serving as Ambassador of Iraq to Italy since September 2022, and Permanent Representative of Iraq to the Food and Agriculture Organization since October 2022. He served as Iraq’s Ambassador to Portugal from 2019 to 2022. From 2016 to 2018, he served as Iraq’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, as well as Permanent Representative of Iraq to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
Mr. Barzani was the Governor of Iraq to the International Fund for Agriculture Development from 2015 to 2016, and from 2014 to 2015, he was the Permanent Representative of Iraq to the Food and Agricultural Organization and United Nations agencies in Rome. From 2010 to 2015, he was Iraq’s Ambassador to Italy, concurrently serving as Ambassador to Malta from 2011 to 2015, and as Ambassador to San Marino from 2012 to 2015. He served as the Kurdistan Democratic Party Representative in Europe from 1997 to 1998, and as the Kurdistan Regional Government Representative in France from 1998 to 2009.
Mr. Barzani has a PhD in Political Science from the University of Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne in France (2006), a Master in Political Science, Political Institutional and Public Policies from the same University (2002), and a Bachelor in Political Science, International Relations and Diplomacy from the same University (2001). He also has a degree in law from the University of Orléans in France (1995). He was born in Erbil, Iraq on 13 February 1972, and is married with four children.
