New Permanent Representative of Austria Presents Credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Presentation of Credentials

 

Désirée Schweitzer, the new Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Schweitzer held the position of Director-General for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Assistance in the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs of Austria since 2018. During the same period, she was Chair of the Board of the Austrian Development Agency. When Austria chaired the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in 2017, she served as High-Level Liaison in the Office of the Secretary-General of the Organization, following her tenure as Deputy Coordinator of the Organization’s Economic and Environmental Activities/Head of Environmental Activities with responsibility for energy security matters at the Organization’s headquarters.

A career diplomat, Ms. Schweitzer previously served in various senior management positions, including 10 years on Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe affairs, as Deputy Head of Division for the Organization and Council of Europe Affairs as well as Deputy Head of the Austrian Permanent Mission to the Organization. She has also worked on European Union enlargement issues. Her overseas postings include Washington, D.C., New York and Islamabad.

Ms. Schweitzer holds a doctor’s degree in law from the University of Vienna and is an alumna of the Austrian Diplomatic Academy (Vienna School of International Studies). She is also a former President of UN WOMEN Austria, and has a long record of supporting development cooperation, gender equality and women’s empowerment.
