NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF URUGUAY PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA

Presentation of Credentials

 

Álvaro Moerzinger Pagani, the new Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Moerzinger Pagani had been serving in 2020 as Advisor on international policy, Executive Tower, Presidency of Uruguay. He was Director of Institutional Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2018 to 2020. He served as Uruguay’s Ambassador to the Netherlands from 2011 to 2016, also serving as Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. From December 2014 and in 2015, he was also the Vice President of the Assembly of States Parties of the International Criminal Court, and in 2016, he was the candidate of the Latin American group to occupy the position of Secretary of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. From 2008 to 2011, he was Director of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay. He was Uruguay’s Ambassador to Canada from 2003 to 2008. He also served as Director General for political affairs at the Ministry from 2000 to 2003.

Mr. Moerzinger Pagani was Uruguay’s Deputy Ambassador to the Organization of American States from 1997 to 2000. He served as a Minister at the Embassy of Uruguay in the United States from 1995 to 1996. He was Deputy Director General for political affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1994, and in 1993, he was Chief of Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He worked at MERCOSUR (Southern Common Market) from 1991 to 1992, first as the person responsible for the organization and installation of the Administrative Secretary of MERCOSUR, and then as First Director of the Administrative Secretariat. He joined the Foreign Service of Uruguay in 1976 and served as the Permanent Delegate of Uruguay to the United Nations in Geneva from 1978 to 1983.

Mr. Moerzinger Pagani has a Doctor in Law from the Universidad de la Republica, Uruguay (1975). He was born on 1 December 1949 in Montevideo, Uruguay, and is married with four children.
