The Joint Inspection Unit of the United Nations system elects its Chair and Vice-Chair for 2026
The Winter Session meeting of the Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) on 3 December 2025 elected Inspector Conrod C. Hunte (Antigua and Barbuda) and Inspector Mohanad Al-Musawi (Iraq) as Chair and Vice-Chair respectively for 2026.
Chair Hunte brings to the JIU nearly four decades of experience in multilateral organizations, including as Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations in New York, and as Permanent Representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency. He has chaired both the Group of 77 and China in the UN Fifth Committee and the Alliance of Small Island States at the Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC. He has also served as Vice-Chair of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions. Since joining the JIU in 2023, Inspector Hunte has contributed to focused reviews on the management and administration of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the United Nations Environment Programme. He also authored a report on the governance and oversight of Executive Boards of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS, UNICEF and UN-Women, and coauthored a report on the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse across the UN system.
Vice-Chair Al-Musawi brings to the JIU more than 22 years of work experience, including as Head of Office of the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia in Beirut. Prior to the UN, he served as Deputy Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations in New York. He has also served as a member of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions for several years and has vice-chaired the Committee for Programme and Coordination of behalf of the Asia-Pacific Group. Within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq, he served in various departments and offices including Europe, political planning, international organizations, human rights and the Minister’s office. Since joining the JIU in 2023, Inspector Al-Musawi has contributed to reviews on budgeting in the UN system organizations and on the management and administration of UN-Women. He is currently authoring a report on strategic planning in the UN system.

The Joint Inspection Unit is the only independent external oversight body of the United Nations system mandated to conduct system-wide evaluations and inspections. It seeks to ensure the optimum use of available resources by the United Nations system, and to enhance the efficiency of its administrative and financial functioning.
