New Permanent Representative of Fiji Presents Credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Presentation of Credentials

Laitia Tamata, the new Permanent Representative of Fiji to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Tamata was a Senior Manager at the Vice-Chancellery of the National University of Fiji, and, since 2023, was a part-time Assistant Professor at the University of Fiji School of Law.  He held numerous advisory positions throughout his career, including as the Executive Director of the Marshall Islands Council of Non-Government Organizations from 2019 to 2023; as Deputy Director of the Pacific Islands Council of Non-Government Organizations from 2015 to 2017; and as Development Advisor, Papua New Guinea Australia Law and Justice Programme, from 2013 to 2015.

Additionally, Mr. Tamata undertook consultancies with the United Nations Development Programme and the Ministry of Environment Fiji (2018) as well as for the United Nations Children’s Fund as a Child Rights Consultant (2002-2003).  He served as a Principal Legal Officer at the Office of the Prime Minister of (2003–2007), and also in multiple international operations cells including the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon Logistics Operations (1988–1989).

Mr. Tamata holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Constitutional Law from Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand (2004) and a Bachelor of Law from the University of the South Pacific, Emalus Campus, Vanuatu (1999).
