New Permanent Observer of the African Union Presents Letter of Nomination to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Presentation of Credentials

Girma Amente, the new Permanent Observer of the African Union to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his letter of nomination to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Amente served as Minister of Agriculture of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia from 2023.  Throughout his career, he has been actively involved in agricultural transformation projects, and was awarded by Oromia Regional State for designing strategies to ensure food security and alleviate poverty.

He formerly served as Minister of Public Enterprises of Ethiopia and has been actively involved in various public and private development activities.

Mr. Amente was also formerly President of Haramaya University in Ethiopia, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in forestry.  He received a doctorate in silviculture from the Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg, Germany, and a master’s degree in production forestry from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, in collaboration with Wondogenet College of Forestry of Ethiopia.
