New Permanent Representative of Costa Rica Presents Credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Presentation of Credentials

Christian Guillermet Fernández, the new Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Guillermet Fernández was Costa Rica’s Deputy Minister of Multilateral Affairs from April 2020 to June 2023.  He served as

Deputy Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations in New York from 2019 to 2020, and Deputy Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations Office at Geneva from 2010 to 2015.  From 2008 to 2009, he was Deputy Permanent Representative of Costa Rica and Political Coordinator during Costa Rica’s membership in the Security Council at the United Nations in New York.  He served as Director General of Foreign Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica from 2016 to 2018, after working as Deputy Director General from 2015 to 2016.

Mr. Guillermet Fernández joined the Costa Rican foreign service in 1998.  He worked with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva and in Santiago, Chile, as Regional Representative a.i. of the High Commissioner from 2006 to 2008.  From 1993 to 1998, he was an official in the Office of the Ombudsman of Costa Rica at the beginning of the creation of the institution.  He has collaborated extensively with different universities and think tanks and has written for prestigious peer-reviewed journals worldwide.

Born in November 1963 in San José, Costa Rica, Mr. Guillermet Fernández studied law and international relations.
