Genève, « Capitale de la Paix », est traditionnellement un espace de diplomatie et de relations internationales. La ville abrite l'un des plus grands centres du système des Nations Unies et son centre le plus fréquenté pour les réunions et les conférences. Historiquement, la « Genève internationale » s'est développée non seulement grâce à la présence de la Société des Nations , largement considérée comme l'ancêtre des Nations Unies, mais aussi grâce à la Croix-Rouge et à d'autres organisations non gouvernementales, imaginées par des philanthropes locaux, et à des organisations telles que l' Union internationale des télécommunications (fondée à Berne en 1865 et transférée à Genève en 1948). L'UIT a été l'une des premières entités créées pour faciliter la coopération technique transfrontalière, et c'est maintenant une agence spécialisée sous l'égide de l'ONU.

Aujourd'hui, Genève abrite environ 40 organisations internationales, 180 missions permanentes et plus de 400 ONG. Une grande partie de la famille des Nations Unies vit à Genève. Outre les entités des Nations Unies dont le siège est ici, la plupart des fonds, programmes et agences des Nations Unies ont un bureau régional ou un bureau de liaison en Suisse. Ensemble, ils donnent vie à « ONU Genève ».

Au cœur de l'ONU Genève se trouve l'Office des Nations Unies à Genève (ONUG), situé à l'intérieur du Palais des Nations, à quelques kilomètres au nord du centre-ville. L'ONUG fait partie du secrétariat de l'ONU, chargé de prendre toutes les mesures nécessaires pour permettre un dialogue entre les États membres : entretenir les installations de conférence et offrir des services de conférence (par exemple, interprétation, soutien technique, compilation et distribution de documents, etc.), sécuriser les lieux de réunion , et rendre les discussions et les décisions accessibles au monde entier. Le bureau de Genève est l'un des trois seuls grands bureaux administratifs en dehors de New York, avec Nairobi et Vienne .

Diverses entités des Nations Unies ont leur siège à Genève, faisant de la ville un point central pour différents sujets tels que la santé, les droits de l'homme, les réfugiés et la migration, le désarmement, etc.

Genève accueille une série de pourparlers de paix entre les parties en conflit, souvent dirigés par de hauts responsables de l'ONU nommés par le Secrétaire général. L'Envoyé spécial pour la Syrie, par exemple, opère depuis Genève, amenant inlassablement toutes les parties à la guerre civile syrienne à la table ronde et essayant de négocier un accord de paix.

Un autre élément important du système des Nations Unies sont ses cinq commissions économiques, réparties dans toutes les régions du monde et servant de "groupes de réflexion" pour le développement social et économique des personnes et des sociétés dans leurs régions respectives. La Commission économique pour l'Europe (CEE) est située au Palais des Nations à Genève.

De plus, plusieurs institutions de recherche du système des Nations Unies, dédiées par exemple à la justice, au développement social ou au désarmement, sont basées dans la ville suisse.
