COMMITTEE ON THE PROTECTION OF THE RIGHTS OF MIGRANT WORKERS CONCLUDES ITS THIRTY-FIRST SESSION

Press Release
Adopts Concluding Observations and Recommendations on the Reports of Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Colombia

The Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families this afternoon closed its thirty-first session after adopting its concluding observations and recommendations on the reports of Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Colombia on their implementation of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

Ahmadou Tall, Committee Chairperson, in his concluding remarks, said although the Convention had the least ratifications among the United Nations instruments, each session underscored how essential the Committee’s mission was for the protection of millions of migrants who daily confronted serious challenges to live in dignity and security. During the session, the Committee had held constructive dialogues with Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Colombia, and adopted its concluding observations on their periodic reports. It had also adopted lists of issues for the reports of Belize and Burkina Faso, and had considered information received from Turkey in a follow-up report following the consideration of its initial report.

The Committee had held an important meeting with States on 4 September 2019, and had met with the Special Rapporteur on the human rights on migrants, Felipe Gonzales. The Committee was carrying out a comparative analysis between the Convention and the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. Mr. Tall thanked United Nations bodies and civil society for cooperating with the Committee, and thanked the Government of Azerbaijan for organizing a meeting of the Committee members in Baku, which would be held following the session.

The Committee’s concluding observations and recommendations on the three countries considered during the session will be available on Friday, 13 September in the afternoon on the session’s webpage. Meetings coverage releases on the public meetings during which the reports were considered are available on the webpage of the United Nations Office at Geneva, while webcasts of the Committee’s public meetings can be accessed here.

The Committee will hold its thirty-second session in April 2020.
