Chers collègues et amis,

C’est un plaisir de vous accueillir aujourd’hui à l’occasion de l’ouverture officielle du Portail des Nations. Cette journée marque l’aboutissement d’une vision et d’un projet ambitieux, portés par notre cher ami, Monsieur Ivan Pictet, et soutenus par de nombreux partenaires. Elle marque également le début d’un nouveau chapitre et une étape importante pour l’Office des Nations Unies à Genève ainsi que pour la Genève internationale dans son ensemble – avec l’inauguration d’un nouveau lieu emblématique qui rapprochera le grand public des Nations Unies.

Permettez-moi de saisir cette occasion pour remercier Monsieur Ivan Pictet. Cher Ivan, merci d’être un fidèle ami des Nations Unies et un ardent défenseur du multilatéralisme. Merci pour votre vision et pour vos efforts constants en faveur de ce projet. La grande famille des Nations Unies est très reconnaissante de voir s’ouvrir cet espace dédié à l’accueil du public sur le site du Palais des Nations. Je remercie également tous les donateurs qui se sont associés à cette initiative, ainsi que toutes les personnes qui ont contribué au projet, de près ou de loin, pour leur travail et leur engagement.

Je souhaite également remercier les représentants des autorités suisses, à tous les niveaux, pour leur soutien constant à ce projet. L’ONU à Genève est reconnaissante de l’excellente coopération qu’elle entretient avec sa ville hôte, son canton et son pays. Ces liens, tissés au fil des années, se traduisent régulièrement par des initiatives créatives et innovantes. Valoriser le travail de la Genève internationale et son impact au quotidien est et restera un moteur essentiel de cette coopération. Nous nous réjouissons de continuer à la développer ensemble.

Dear friends,

For 90 years, the Palais des Nations has stood as a place where the international community comes together – to discuss, to cooperate, and to engage on the most pressing challenges of our time. Yet for many, this work has remained distant, and at times difficult to grasp.

This new space brings the work carried out within these walls closer to the people we serve. It invites visitors not only to discover the United Nations, but to connect with it – to understand the principles of multilateralism, and to see how cooperation among nations shapes their daily lives.

International Geneva is unique in this regard. The city hosts over 100 international organizations, including over 40 UN funds, programmes, and specialized agencies, a nearly universal representation of 187 Member States, some 750 Non-Governmental Organizations, a dynamic private sector and prominent academic institutions. This concentration of actors working for peace, human rights, humanitarian action, health, trade, science, and innovation, is truly unmatched.

The Portail des Nations and its immersive experience “Together” offer a new gateway into this ecosystem and will help us strengthen the ties between International Geneva and the public, both locally and globally.

“Together” was developed with contributions from several United Nations entities in Geneva. It offers a unique approach to engaging the public on issues that are central to the priorities of the United Nations. The immersive journey is an invitation to learn more, to question and to engage more deeply with the realities of multilateral affairs.

The entire UN family in Geneva is grateful to the commitment of the Foundation Portail des Nations to promoting multilateralism and we look forward to seeing this space evolve over the coming months. The Foundation will operate the Portail des Nations until the end of 2027, and the UN will then take over the operations of this future UN Geneva Visitor Centre. We are proud that this initiative reflects our commitment to transparency, accessibility, and dialogue – values that are more important than ever at a time when multilateralism is under pressure.

The Portail des Nations will benefit communities here in Geneva and around the world – bringing people closer to the United Nations and preserving the legacy of international cooperation for future generations.

Let us see this moment not simply as an opening, but as a beginning – of renewed connections, deeper understanding and stronger support for the work we do together.
