Excellencies
Ladies and Gentlemen:

It is my privilege to represent the Acting Director-General of UNOG, Mr. Michael Møller, who very much regrets that he cannot be here today. He has asked me to deliver a message to you in support of this exhibition:

The message goes as follows:

“It is my pleasure to open “Lumière de Paix”, an exceptional exhibition of contemporary artworks. Thank you to the Permanent Mission of Serbia and to the Uros Predic Art Society for their collaboration in bringing these 150 artworks to the Palais des Nations. I would also like to thank Ms. Maja Gojković, President of the National Assembly of Serbia, for her support and presence here today. And of course, a special thank you to the 33 artists, from Serbia and beyond, for sharing their talent with us.

This exhibition is a revealing display of the unique cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious identities of the artists – both diverse yet united -- in their aspiration for beauty and for the pursuit of peace. The richness and liveliness of the subjects depicted, testify to the vigour and commitment to progress, in a world burdened with social, economic and political challenges.

Art thrives on diversity and serves to transport people, regardless of our differences. Art unites us. It allows us to see challenges in a new light outside of conference rooms, and to envision together our shared future and potential.

It is rather symbolic that the artists have chosen Switzerland, and Geneva in particular, as a site for their creative assembly. This is yet another confirmation of the positive synergy that is inherent in UNOG’s multifaceted activities, where seasoned diplomats and experts interact with artistic communities to foster a culture of peace.

Serbia’s support for the work of the United Nations, and its active role in International Geneva, are highly appreciated. Serbia has been particularly active in UNOG’s Cultural Activities Programme, both through cultural events and generous donations, notably its recent donation to the UN Dispute Tribunal Courtroom earlier this year. I look forward to our continued cooperation.

Ladies and gentlemen:
As we enjoy this vibrant display of artworks, let’s continue to give our support to the artists of the Uros Predic Art Society. And continue our shared efforts to build peace, in the spirit of this very exhibition.

Thank you very much.”

That was the end of the Acting Director-General’s message.

I join him in wishing you a very successful event.

Thank you.
