COMMITTEE ON THE ELIMINATION OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION CONCLUDES EIGHTY-FIFTH SESSION

Adopts Concluding Observations and Recommendations on Reports of El Salvador, United States, Peru, Cameron, Iraq, Japan and Estonia

The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination today concluded its eighty-fifth session after adopting its concluding observations and recommendations on the reports of El Salvador, United States, Peru, Cameroon, Iraq, Japan and Estonia on how those countries implement the provisions of the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

During the public closing meeting, the Rapporteur of the Committee, Dilip Lahiri, announced the names of the Committee Experts who would serve as Rapporteurs for the reports which would be considered in the April-May and August 2015 sessions of the Committee.

The Chairperson of the Committee, Jose Francisco Cali Tzay, said in addition to considering country reports, the Committee had a lot of other work to discuss in 2015, including thematic discussions, working methods, the issue of individual communications and others. He said he was pleased to sum up the work that the Committee had done, as this session had been marked by a large amount of work and the consideration of the reports of seven States. He also emphasized the importance of timely communications with States; regular interaction with States helped them comply with their responsibilities. The Committee had also issued a statement on Iraq, under its early warning and urgent action procedure, calling the attention of the Human Rights Council and the Security Council to the human rights situation in Iraq.

The eighty-sixth session of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination will take place from 27 April to 15 May 2015, during which it will review the reports of Sudan, Germany, Guatemala, France, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Denmark.
