STATEMENT FROM UNOG DIRECTOR-GENERAL MICHAEL MØLLER ON THE PASSING OF VETERAN JOURNALIST GORDON MARTIN

Press Conferences

UNOG Director-General Michael Møller has learned with great sadness of the passing on Tuesday of veteran journalist Gordon Martin, the doyen of the international press corps in Geneva and a distinguished former president of the ACANU (Association des Correspondents Auprès des Nations Unies).

The United Nations in Geneva benefited greatly from his knowledgeable reporting on world affairs. Gordon Martin’s career in global journalism spanned six decades, from 1955 to 2014, and included a quarter century of reporting from the Palais des Nations on behalf of Vatican Radio. His death marks the end of an era.

In a farewell radio announcement aired on his retirement, at age 87, Mr. Martin described his dedication to coverage of human rights and humanitarian issues, saying that “the United Nations in Geneva is an ideal place to follow such developments”. The Director-General agrees wholeheartedly with this statement.

The Director-General wishes to express his deep condolences to all those who were close to him, and to acknowledge Mr. Martin’s considerable contributions to public knowledge of the crucial work carried out in International Geneva.
