STATEMENT BY THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE IN GENEVA ON THE APPOINTMENT OF FILIPPO GRANDI AS THE NEXT HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES

The Director-General of the United Nations Office in Geneva Michael Moller welcomes the appointment of Mr. Filippo Grandi as the next High Commissioner for Refugees and warmly welcomes Mr. Grandi into the International Geneva Family.

Mr. Grandi brings a wealth of experience to his new challenging functions, having served the UNHCR in various capacities since 1988, including as head of a number of emergency operations. Most recently, Mr. Grandi was Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), 2010-2014.

The Director-General takes this opportunity to thank High Commissioner Antonio Gutteres for his extraordinary contribution to asylum seekers, refugees and internally displaced persons across the world and for his outstanding stewardship of UNHCR over the last 10 years.
