MEETINGS OF THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL – SUMMARY FOR MAY 2011

Press Conferences

In May, the Director-General met with the Permanent Representatives of Belarus, Canada, China, Dominican Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Pakistan, Poland, Qatar, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Thailand, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the United States of America to discuss challenges before the United Nations and how to reinforce the role of Geneva within the United Nations system.

During the month, the Director-General met with Executive Heads and senior officials of the following entities to discuss the opportunity for collaboration across the UN system: United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Office at Vienna/Office on Drugs and Crime (UNOV/UNODC), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), International Organisation for Migration (IOM), United Nations Legal Counsel, United Nations Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) and the Joint Inspection Unit (JIU).

The Director-General also met with the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Small States, the Permanent Observer of the Council of Europe, the Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the Secretary-General of the World Association of United Nations Federations (WFUNA) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to discuss issues of mutual concern.
