New Permanent Representative of Greece Presents Credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Presentation of Credentials

Alexandros Papaioannou, the new Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Papaioannou had been serving as Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece in Athens, and Director of the Press and Media Service at the Ministry since October 2020. He has also been a visiting professor at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium, since September 2017.

Mr. Papaioannou was a policy officer responsible for relations between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union at the Political Affairs and Security Policy Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization International Staff in Brussels from March 2012 to August 2019. He was also an advisor in the Policy Planning Unit of the Office of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s Secretary-General in Brussels from January 2004 to August 2006, and from September 2009 to March 2012.

He served at the Greek Embassy in Tunisia as Deputy Head of Mission from August 2006 to September 2008; at the Permanent Representation of Greece to the European Union in Brussels from November 2002 to June 2003; at the Embassy of Greece to the Holy See as Deputy Head of Mission from August 2002 to November 2002; at the Embassy of Greece to the Russian Federation from April 2001 to June 2001; and at the Embassy of Greece to Italy from September 2000 to April 2001, from June 2001 to August 2002, and from July 2003 to January 2004.

Mr. Papaioannou has a Bachelor of Science in economics and international relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science in London (1995) and a Master of Arts in European Policy and Administration from the College of Europe in Bruges (1996). He was born on 25 August 1974 in Athens.
