NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF LATVIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Raimonds Jansons, the new Permanent Representative of Latvia to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Jansons served as Ambassador of Latvia to Belgium and Luxembourg from 2006 to 2011. He served as Counselor at the Permanent Mission of Latvia to the United Nations Office at Geneva from 1998 to 2002. Other foreign postings include serving as Second Secretary at the Latvian Embassy in Canada from 1994 to 1996.

A career diplomat, Mr. Jansons entered the Foreign Service of Latvia in 1992 and served as Director of the Department of International Organizations and Human Rights at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2006; Director of the Legal Department at the Ministry from 2002 to 2004, and from 1996 to 1998; and as Head of the International Law Division in 1994. He has led and participated in bilateral and international conferences and meetings, including United Nations meetings, on behalf of his country.

Mr. Jansons has a degree from the University of Latvia, Faculty of Law. He has lectured at the Faculty of Economy of the University of Latvia and the Latvian Centre of training of judges. Mr. Jansons was born on 26 February, 1971 in Riga, Latvia. He is married with three children.
