NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF REPUBLIC OF SERBIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Ugljesa Zvekic, the new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Serbia to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Zvekic had been working with the United Nations. He was in charge of Strategic Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Vienna, Austria from 2004 to 2009. From 1999 to 2004, he was head of the anti-crime programme of the UN regional office for Southern Africa, based in Pretoria, South Africa. He joined the United Nations crime and drugs programme in 1984, where he worked until 1999, including as the Deputy Director of the UN International Crime and Justice Research Institute, based in Italy.

Mr. Zvekic was born on 2 August 1950 in Belgrade, Serbia. He has a law degree and a Ph.D. in sociology. He was a Fulbright scholar from 1973 to 1975, and then worked at the Institute for Criminological and Sociological Research in Belgrade from 1976 to 1984. He has published extensively on crime and development, and reform of the criminal justice system from the perspective of human rights and international standards. He has also taught in many academic institutions worldwide. He is married with two daughters.
