NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF JAMAICA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Peter C. Black, the new Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Black had been serving as Jamaica’s High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago since 2005. Concurrently, he had been serving as non-resident Ambassador of Jamaica to Suriname and High Commissioner to Barbados, Guyana and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States. From 2001 to 2005, he was Under-Secretary at the Bilateral and Regional Affairs Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica. Concurrently, he served as Ambassador and Special Envoy to the Caribbean Community and Common Market and non-resident Ambassador of Jamaica to Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

A career diplomat, Mr. Black served as Jamaica’s Ambassador to Germany from 1992 to 2001, concurrently serving as non-resident Ambassador to Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Russian Federation, Switzerland, Israel and the Vatican. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in 1968, and other foreign postings include at the Jamaican High Commission in London from 1979 to 1972; the Permanent Mission of Jamaica to the United Nations office at Geneva from 1972 to 1973; the Embassy of Jamaica in Paris from 1973 to 1975; the Embassy of Jamaica in Bonn from 1978 to 1983; and the Embassy of Jamaica in Moscow from 1983 to 1987. From 1989 to 1992, he served as Executive Assistant to the Executive Chairman of the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica and Special Adviser to the Prime Minister, concurrently serving as non-resident Ambassador of Jamaica to Cuba.

Mr. Black has a BA in economics and history from the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica (1968), a diploma in international relations from Oxford University in the United Kingdom (1979), and a certificate in business management from the University of the West Indies (1989).

He was born on 27 June 1948 and is married.
