Human Rights Concert 2021
Ladies and gentlemen
Welcome to the 8th edition of the traditional Human Rights Concert to mark Human Rights Day at the Palais des Nations! I would like to sincerely thank the ONUART Foundation and its President Ambassador Juan Antonio March, the Government of Spain, and their many partners for making this event possible, despite challenging circumstances. We are extremely privileged to welcome back Maestro Sokolov, and I look forward to his magic performance.
Equality, the theme of this year’s Human Rights Day, is at the very heart of dignity and human rights. Many of us take equal rights for granted. We do not question where they come from and we do not fear to lose them. Yet, for many people around the world, equality and rights remain out of reach.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the world’s most translated document, embodies the international community’s commitment to human dignity. Together with the United Nations Charter, the Declaration represents one of the most powerful expressions of our universally shared values. Human rights and equal opportunities underpin the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, our roadmap to a better world, and provide the essential foundation for the United Nations’ work.
Through its unique convening power, music unites people around the world. This concert is an opportunity to remind ourselves, through music, of our shared responsibilities to one another. When we all work together – the United Nations, governments, the private sector, the artistic community, and many others – we can accomplish a lot. It is exactly this kind of inclusive collaboration we need, on a much larger scale, to address inequalities and other global challenges of the 21st century. It is only fitting that this inspiring display of unity takes place in the symbolic Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room.
Ladies and gentlemen,
As we mark Human Rights Day 2021, let us unite behind the ideals of equality and human rights, and live up to the full promise, potential and hope of the United Nations.
