Concert on the occasion of United Nations Day 2013 (English and French)

C'est un plaisir et un honneur d'être avec vous ce soir pour célébrer la Journée des Nations Unies. Cette soirée est très spéciale pour moi car je quitterai dans quelques jours l’Organisation des Nations Unies et Genève. Je remercie les orateurs qui m’ont précédé pour leurs paroles chaleureuses et leur soutien.

Je tiens à exprimer ma sincère gratitude à la Confédération suisse, au Canton et à la Ville de Genève pour leur engagement indéfectible et pour leur amitié. Leur soutien est essentiel à la réussite du mandat confié à l'Organisation des Nations Unies non seulement à Genève mais aussi à travers le monde. Je suis donc heureux de pouvoir remercier en personne quelques uns des principaux représentants de la Confédération suisse, du Canton et de la Ville de Genève qui sont parmi nous ce soir.

Lors de la Journée des Nations Unies, nous réaffirmons notre engagement envers les idéaux et les principes des Nations Unies. Nous réaffirmons également notre engagement collectif envers la coopération internationale et la paix, le développement et les droits humains. Ce soir, nous le faisons à travers un langage universel: la musique. La Neuvième Symphonie de Schubert - joué magnifiquement par l' Orchestre de la Suisse romande - est un hommage à nos efforts communs pour un monde plus harmonieux.

The United Nations is unique. It is the embodiment of the shared aspirations of the international community for a better world. It has been a privilege to serve this Organization and I only have the utmost respect for its legacy and mission, its Member States and for the people it serves.

I truly believe that the United Nations in Geneva is especially unique. It is at the forefront of the Organization’s efforts to promote global governance, prevent conflict and build peace. It is respected as a centre for practical collaboration on a range of pressing international challenges - from human rights to public health to trade and development. As we have seen with the recent talks on Iran and Syria at the Palais des Nations, Geneva is considered the ideal location for mediation and conflict resolution.

I feel privileged to have taken part in the continuous development of ‘International Geneva’. With the support of the Swiss Government at all levels, we have worked together to strengthen Geneva’s role as a multilateral hub. We have advanced disarmament issues and expanded our partnerships with NGOs, think tanks and the academic community to further develop Geneva as a platform for intellectual innovation. We have taken steps to preserve and enhance the sustainability of the historic Palais des Nations – a shared symbol of international cooperation. And we have engaged the public in Geneva and beyond in our work to shape global solutions.

It is for these reasons – among many others – that I truly have been honoured to consider Geneva my home. And why I leave feeling genevois! I intend to carry this genevois feeling with me as I return to Kazakhstan; just as I intend to also bring the spirit of this city – and this country – back with me as well.

I hope that you will continue to rely on me as a committed promoter of the principles and values of the United Nations, and of ‘International Geneva’. And I look forward to being a frequent visitor!
