The Conference on Disarmament, the world's single multilateral forum for disarmament negotiations, will hold the first public plenary of its 2015 session on Tuesday, 20 January at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.
The session will open under the presidency of Mexico. The presidency of the Conference rotates among its Member States according to the English alphabetical order, with each president holding office for four working weeks. The 2014 Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) Meeting of Experts was held at the United Nations Office at Geneva from 4 to 8 August 2014. Formally known as the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction, the Convention was the first multilateral disarmament treaty to ban an entire category of weapons. It was opened for signature in 1972 and entered into force in 1975. It currently has 170 States Parties, with a further 10 having signed but not yet ratified.
