The Conference on Disarmament this morning heard statements from Kazakhstan on the anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, and Italy and Sweden on the relevance of a Fissile Material Cut-Off Treaty for cessation of the nuclear arms race and nuclear disarmament.

Paul Kavanagh, the new Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Kavanagh had been serving as the Representative of Ireland to the Political and Security Committee of the European Union since 2004. He was the Deputy Political Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin from 2003 to 2004.

The 2006 United Nations Programme of Fellowships on Disarmament begins today at the United Nations Office at Geneva with the participation of young diplomats from 30 Member States of the United Nations. The programme will last for a period of almost ten weeks.
